What Oil Should I Put In My Lawnmower?

IMG_5044.jpg

Easily one of the most common questions we get here at Humphreys’ Outdoor Power is “What oil do I need for my engine?”. As always we recommend following what your owner’s manual says, but we do have a little experience in this arena and here is what we recommend given the climate and altitude of mid Indiana. These are also only in reference to the machines we sell here, but why would anyone purchase a mower elsewhere?

The main categories for what type of oil to use are:

Is it a push mower or riding mower/zero turn mower?

Who is the engine manufactured by?

Pushmowers:

All the pushmowers we sell take SAE30. Their engines include, Kohler, Toro, Briggs and Stratton and Honda engines. Easy enough right?

Riding mowers/ zero turn mowers:

Kawasaki: 10W30

Kohler: 10W30

Briggs and Stratton: 10W30

Generac: Lucas 15W40

Kubota Diesel: Kubota 15W40

It’s important to note that quantities vary, you’ll need to consult your owner’s manual or contact us and we’ll give you an idea of how much your particular machine should hold. Again these are engine oil types, not transmission types. We may have another blog on what type of transmission oil is used in the machines we sell. Our parts department stocks all the oil and parts you would need for the equipment we sell.  Feel free to contact us with any questions, concerns, parts or a piece of equipment.
